There’s no formula that fits every device. Here’s how we actually weigh it up, so you can make the call yourself, or ask us and get an honest answer either way.
Usually worth repairing.
The rest of it is fine
One part has failed, such as a screen or battery, and everything else still works well.
It’s a known, contained job
A cracked screen, a dead battery, a broken hinge or a loud fan are jobs with a clear fix and a clear price.
It’s newer, or was expensive
The more it cost new, and the less it’s aged, the more a repair tends to make sense next to buying again.
You know and like it
Your files, your settings, your accounts, all already the way you want them. That’s worth something too.
Usually better to replace.
The repair costs close to a replacement
If fixing it costs nearly what a decent replacement would, put the money there instead.
It’s already struggling elsewhere
A repair only fixes what you asked about. If it’s also slow, the battery is going and the charging port is loose, one repair won’t fix the rest.
It can’t keep up any more
Software has moved on and it’s straining to keep up, whatever you fix.
It’s had more than one repair already
Not a hard rule, but worth asking honestly whether you’re about to do this again in six months.

Common questions.
Will you tell me honestly if it’s not worth fixing?
Yes. If the repair costs more than the device is worth, or won’t really solve the problem, we’ll say so before you spend anything. It costs nothing to ask.
What if I only find out once you’ve opened it up?
That happens sometimes, usually with a fault that turns out to be bigger once we can see inside. We stop and give you the new price before doing anything further, and you decide from there.
Is it ever worth repairing an old device?
Often, yes, if the fault is small and everything else still works. A cracked screen on an otherwise good three-year-old laptop is usually worth fixing. A laptop that’s slow, has a fading battery and now a cracked screen is a different conversation.
